American Airlines plans to cut 1,500 maintenance division jobs, including 1,300 mechanics and 200 management and support positions.

It is not yet known whether any St. Louis employees will lose their jobs. "We do not have any specific details at this time about any particular station or maintenance base," said Tim Wagner, an airline spokesman. "The positions reduced can be expected to be spread throughout our system, though."

The airline is offering early retirement to its workers to reduce the amount of lay-offs.

American Airlines reported Wednesday a net loss of $1.4 billion for the second quarter of 2008, mostly due to record jet fuel prices, the company said.

The airline recently said it would cut a total of 6,800 jobs to cope with financial distress brought on by fuel costs and a weakening economy.

Fort Worth, Texas-based American Airlines is the operating arm of AMR Corp. (NYSE: AMR) and has operations in St. Louis.
