York will increase its full-time manufacturing work force in Wichita by nearly 25 percent thanks to an uptick in year-round business.
The manufacturer of residential air conditioners, furnaces and heat pumps will have a job fair Thursday at the Airport Hilton in hopes of finding people to fill approximately 200 full-time and 200 temporary positions.
"Business is great," said Steve Donowick, human resources manager for the plant at 3110 N. Mead.
Donowick said the York division, which includes Wichita and the light-commercial plant in Norman, Okla., went over $1 billion in sales in 2005, the first time it has reached that milestone.
York has become the largest manufacturer in the area outside the aircraft industry, Donowick said, with about 1,200 full-time employees in Wichita -- 850 in manufacturing.
The company has used a lot of temporary help in the past so it didn't have to rely on layoffs when business dropped off. He was proud to note that the Wichita plant hasn't had any layoffs during his six years with the company.
"In years past, it's been a seasonal thing," he said. "You get done building air conditioners and then go into furnace season. And at some point, you don't need as many people building furnaces.... Right now we're not seeing a drop-off at all."
Express Personnel Services will handle the job fair, and York officials will be there to conduct interviews.
