Wells Fargo Home Mortgage is hiring up to 200 employees in its customer service department in San Antonio to handle an increase in mortgage activity.
San Antonio was selected because Wells Fargo has available room to grow at its Wachovia office complex in Westover Hills and because “there's a lot of great talent in the area,” said Helen Bow, assistant vice president of regional banking communications for Well Fargo.
With interest rates near record lows, the new employees will help manage increased interest from customers either looking to refinance an existing mortgage or to apply for a new loan.
“We are seeing growth in (refinances), and at the same time people are also interested in remodeling their homes,” Bow said. “We have such good rates right now that people are wanting to buy and sell. We're seeing a lot of activity.”
Wells Fargo services one in six mortgages throughout the country.
To help with hiring, which Wells Fargo hopes to begin immediately, the company is hosting a job fair from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wachovia office complex at 4101 Wiseman Blvd., Building 104.
Positions are available both in default/retention for mortgage servicing, which works with customers on loan delinquencies and payment options, and in loan application processing.
Some positions will involve working with customers, while others might involve call-center-type duties.

Wells Fargo did not provide a salary or pay range for the positions.
At the end of 2008, Wells Fargo had about 4,300 employees in San Antonio, including those from Wachovia, which Wells Fargo acquired last year.
