Additional hiring among the nation’s restaurateurs this summer should be on par with its growth last year, which the National Restaurant Association sees as an indicator of an approaching recovery.

The association released employment projections for the summer months — June, July and August — on Monday.

It anticipates an average hiring boost of 4.1 percent during those months from March employment levels, the typical comparison month.

That’s the same employment growth the sector experienced last summer before the financial crisis began pounding markets. It’s slightly lower than the 4.8 percent growth the sector recorded in 2007.

“Restaurant operator optimism has increased steadily this year, and combined with these advances in summer restaurant employment, the end of the current downturn in the restaurant industry is likely in sight,” said Hudson Riehle, a senior vice president for research at the association.

The San Antonio restaurant sector staffing has grown through May, and operators said more would be hired this summer, but not in greater numbers than normal.

J.D. McDowell, managing partner of the Outback Steakhouse on Interstate 10, said he already has started to build his staff up by 8 percent because of the summer rush.

While that’s no bigger or smaller a boost than the summer normally creates, McDowell sees the increase “as an optimistic sign.”

Steve Nivin, a St. Mary’s University economics professor who directs an economics think tank, said San Antonio restaurants are likely to be a little healthier than restaurants nationwide because the area economy has been one of the nation’s strongest.

Hiring growth of 4.1 percent would be a good sign, but not necessarily an indicator that a recovery had started, he said.
