When crafting a resume and cover letter, remember that your mission is to make the hiring manager's job easy. To increase the likelihood that your application stands out, connect the dots for prospective employers by outlining how you've used your unique skills to contribute to an organization's success.
Many job seekers fail to provide this level of detail, instead peppering their materials with vague and ambiguous language. For instance, the following candidates' lack of specificity could prove troublesome to their success on the job hunt:
"SKILLS: More than a few."
But less than a lot?
"SKILLS: Self-tolerance."
But how do others feel about you?
"SKILLS: I specialize in bringing a light."
Could be handy if the power goes out.
On the other end of the spectrum, this applicant has a flair for details:
"JOB HISTORY: Fact checker. Tenaciously verified facts for an array of publications. Highlights include wrangling White House confirmation of sandwich type eaten by a candidate in the 1988 presidential campaign."
In addition, if you choose to include an objective in your resume, keep it straightforward so that hiring managers can quickly ascertain your career goals. Here's a good example: "To obtain a human resources position with a focus on benefits administration."
The next two candidates didn't cut to the chase:
"OBJECTIVE: I'm looking for a new job. I'm a caterpillar that has emerged from its cocoon."
Did you build any skills while you were in there?
"OBJECTIVE: To obtain a position that will keep me moving."
So you're willing to relocate?
Finally, you won't do yourself any favors by focusing your objective statement on personal desires or complaints.
"OBJECTIVE: I just need a job that will allow me to rent a decent apartment. I don't want to live with my parents anymore!"
