BRISTOL, Va. - A Virginia Beach company hoping to lure more than 150 skilled workers from this region is offering to pay relocation packages to sweeten the deal.

STIHL Inc., a manufacturer of chain saws and other power equipment, will hold information sessions March 11 in Bristol to meet with folks interested in living and working in Virginia Beach.

Company spokeswoman Jaclyn Bailey said STIHL officials decided to recruit skilled workers from this area when Bristol Compressors announced in January it would lay off 290 people in March.

"These jobs are along the same lines of the employees that we are looking for at STIHL," said Bailey. "Any type of manufacturing, machining, plastics, molding - any type of company with these kinds of jobs that is suffering layoffs or plant closings - are a target for STIHL."

STIHL is a German company that operates its U.S. headquarters in Virginia Beach, employing about 1,500 there.

Bailey said the company had already planned to hire another 300 people this year at its Virginia Beach operation. Then STIHL announced a major expansion at the site, calling for another 150 employees.

"We are reaching outside of our local market in order to connect with a wider spectrum of qualified applicants," said Stan Redwood, director of human resources for STIHL.

Bailey said company officials first visited the Bristol area in mid-February and decided to come back again this month to recruit employees.

"We're doing much more of a push this time to tell people that ‘Hey, we are coming to town. We're serious about hiring you,'" Bailey said.

"And STIHL is offering relocation packages. They are paying people to come and live and work in Virginia Beach," she said.

Prospective employees can meet with STIHL officials during one of four sessions March 11 at the Bristol Holiday Inn off Interstate 81 at Exit 7. Sessions will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., 11 a.m. to noon, 3 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.
