BEDFORD, PA. -- Recreational Equipment Inc. plans to being hiring for a new distribution center it built in Pennsylvania.

Seattle-based REI plans to hire at least 100 people to work at the center initially, though as many as 350 will be hired over the next year, company spokeswoman Megan Behrbaum said.

The company scheduled hiring clinics Friday and Saturday at the new center near Cessna.

Base pay will be about $9.45 an hour, the company said. The first workers hired will start in September.

REI, which has 82 stores in 26 states, sells outdoor clothing, camping gear and supplies for outdoor sports. The Bedford County distribution center will supply the chain's 18 stores east of the Mississippi.

REI was founded as a co-op in the basement of a Seattle home in 1938. It now has 3.5 million members. Anyone can shop there, but members of the co-op receive an annual dividend based on purchases.
