Several local firms have followed through on previously announced hiring plans, despite the fact that the economic meltdown has forced many companies to resort to layoffs or hiring freezes.

Life is good, for example, at DEI Services Corp., a Winter Park simulation and training firm. The company hired about 80 people for engineering, technology writing and program management positions this year, bringing its staff level up to 286.

The company did so because it locked in four contracts under its five-year strategic plan, said DEI Senior Vice President Bill Patton. “We knew how much manpower we would need to fulfill those contracts.”

In addition, the firm relies on U.S. Department of Defense contracts, and military spending continued to increase in 2008 — something not enjoyed by other industries such as construction. DEI’s revenue is anticipated to grow to $32 million by year-end, up 23 percent from $26 million in 2007.
