Hagerstown, MD - State lawmakers are considering a bill that would raise the minimum hiring age for correctional officers from 18 to 21.

Veteran prison workers and their unions support the move. The minimum age was lowered in 2002 to expand the pool of potential applicants.

The Department of Legislative Services says 173 out of nearly 4900 correctional officers are younger than 21.

Sue Esty is interim executive director of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 92, the collective bargaining agent for state prison workers.

She says the age limit is a safety issue because officers must feel confident that new hires are up to the job.
