To meet production demands for their customers, Southern Motion this week will begin hiring approximately 70 new employees, according to G. Lipscomb, vice president of sales for the company.

Southern Motion is expanding operations by adding a whole new “cell,” which consists of every facet of the operations from frames to upholstery.

“That put us over 500 here at our main plant and we have about 50 in our trucking operation and about 50 in our frame plant,” Lipscomb said.

This is the company’s second expansion in less than six months, with the hiring of 65 new employees in October 2006.

Southern Motion was founded in 1996 in Tupelo to manufacture exclusively reclining furniture — including chairs, sofas and loveseats.

When the need for production capacity increased in 1999, Southern Motion relocated to Pontotoc, doubling both size and capacity for production.

In 2002, the plant again doubled with a move into a new facility on Highway 15 constructed to meet the needs of a growing account base.
