Company will add more than 50 engineers by early summer

March 14, 2008

Harris RF Communications, one of the area's largest manufacturers, plans to add more than 50 engineering positions by early summer.

Most of the positions will be in Rochester, though some will be at Harris RF facilities in Maryland, California and Florida, said Danielle Richards, a senior human resources manager with the military radio maker.

The hiring is in response to ongoing growth at Harris RF, Richards said. Parent company Harris Corp. earlier this year increased its revenue projections for its 2008 fiscal year largely in response to booming demand for Harris RF's military radios.

And the company announced last week its most recent sizable order with the U.S. Air Force buying $42.5 million of the company's Falcon tactical radios.

Harris specifically is looking for people with software or electrical engineering expertise and lengthy experience, Richards said.

To get those candidates, the company is advertising its openings through everything from college alumni associations to a display at the Greater Rochester International Airport.

With competition for such workers being particularly high, Richards said, the company is trying a recruitment campaign that cuts down on the time involved in interviewing and decision making, Richards said.

In Harris' streamlined approach, candidates will be brought in groups on Fridays, go through a quick burst of interviewing and tours, with the idea being candidates could receive job offers as quickly as the following week, Richards said.

"We want to be able to close our sales more quickly," she said. "(And) we want to provide a differentiated interview experience for the candidate."

Harris RF, a division of Florida-based Harris Corp., employs 2,200 in Rochester.
