Nissan North America will probably have to hire more than 700 people to fully staff its new headquarters here.
The automaker announced late today that 42% of its California employees plan to make the move to Music City when the headquarters opens downtown in August.
The company declined to give specific numbers of how many people will relocate but based on earlier state government estimates of 1,275 jobs created here by the move, that means 536 current Nissan employees will transfer with the company. Another 739 will have to be hired.
The final tally means Nissan is bringing fewer of its California employees than the carmaker had hoped for, but more than some industry analysts had predicted. The company has already hired or made offers to 200 new employees, including some hired away from other carmakers outside Tennessee.
Nissan plans to step up its recruiting efforts.
“The retention percentage is in line with expectations, and we’re happy that hundreds of talented people have decided to stay with Nissan as we continue to profitably grow our business,” Jim Morton, the company’s senior vice president for administration and finance, said in a statement.
“We’re also pleased that nearly 200 highly qualified people have joined our team in the past several months and more are likely to join soon,” he said. “As we prepare to move to our new headquarters we are continuing our intensive recruitment activities through job fairs, a new Web site and following up with people who already have expressed interest in working for Nissan.”
