As machinery to manufacture Sharpie markers is moved into the Newell Rubbermaid Maryville plant, the company has started to hire.

David Doolittle, vice president, corporate communications, said the company is placing employment ads in the Classified section of The Daily Times and is taking applications at state of Tennessee Career Centers.

“We have begun the process of moving the machines to Maryville. As they are put in place we are actively hiring,” he said.

The process will not be complete until November, he said, and the hiring process will be gradual.

“There might be five to 10 one week, and two to five in another,” Doolittle said. Sharpie production will require 150 additional employees at the Sanford facility in Maryville — Sanford Brands is a division of Newell Rubbermaid.

Doolittle said it is not yet known how many new workers will be hired. Equipment is being moved from the company’s Shelbyville plant, and employees there are being given an opportunity to transfer. Also, the company’s Lewisville plant is being closed.

Blount countians encouraged to apply

“We gave employees a full year’s notice so that in this difficult economy they would have opportunity to find other employment,” he said.

Doolittle said Blount Countians are encouraged to apply for positions at the Maryville operation, where about 450 people currently work.

“We certainly encourage those folks to please do apply. We are advertising,” he said. About 200 jobs were eliminated at the Maryville plant earlier in 2008, but the new positions will bring the work force up to about 550 by the end of 2009, the company has estimated.

Located on William Blount Drive

The Maryville plant manufactures components for writing instruments, office products and chair mats. It opened in January 1998 at 1427 William Blount Drive.

We'll have more details as they develop or in Saturday's edition of The Daily Times.
