FLOWOOD, MS - Two new stores opened in Flowood last week despite the sluggish economy and more are set to open in the coming weeks.

New Flowood Businesses Hiring

Bed Bath and Beyond opened last Tuesday in the Market Street Lifestyle Center and JC Penney opened its new prototype store on Saturday, pleasing Flowood Mayor Gary Rhoads.

"We're very excited to have new stores opening up, especially with the economy being the way it is today," Rhoads said.

The mayor said he is grateful the development was planned two years ago because if planning would have started in this economy, he said it would not be happening, 16 WAPT's Perna Roberson said.

Rhoads said the city had a 3 percent drop in sales tax revenues over the past fiscal year.

"With the new retail stores coming in, I'm hoping we'll make up the loss that we've had," Rhoads said.

There are some stores coming to the development that are new to Mississippi, like Dick's Sporting Goods, which opens Friday, and Designer Shoe Warehouse, which is set to open in the spring.

For, Jackie Reeder, JC Penney and Bed Bath and Beyond create enough excitement because the stores are closer to her.

"If I was going to Northpark (Mall) before all this opened, I had to have a lot of stuff to build up before I go out there," Reeder said.

"I think it's very nice. It's clean, everything is organized. I got in there and got just what I wanted," said Donna Andrews, a JC Penney shopper.

The manager of the new JC Penney store said the customers love the location, which also has the state's first Sephora and employs nearly 130 people -- and they're still hiring.
