Medical device maker Medtronic Inc. said late Monday it will add 1,400 jobs over the next five years in San Antonio, Texas to staff a new diabetes therapy and education center.

The company said it will start recruiting immediately for the new diabetes therapy management and education center, which is part of the unit making insulin pumps and diabetes monitoring devices. It is scheduled to open in late summer.

Medtronic said the new center is expected to generate more than $750 million in economic benefits annually for San Antonio and Texas. The company was awarded grants and incentives from state and local governments totaling $14 million.

In turn, the company is granting $50,000 each in grants to the Social & Health Research Center and CentroMed for programs that will help reduce diabetes risk factors and boost education about the condition.

Minneapolis-based Medtronic has more than 40,000 employees worldwide.
