GREENVILLE - The Michigan Department of Corrections hopes to hire 500-700 Corrections Officers statewide through a series of job fairs, one of which will be held Friday, January 26 at the Montcalm County Michigan Works! Service Center in Greenville (114 S. Greenville West Drive). Montcalm County Michigan Works! will coordinate the fair that will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Applicants can fill out an application that day and attend information meetings conducted by representatives from the Department of Corrections.
Corrections Officers oversee and participate in the custody, security, and treatment of prisoners in forty-two correctional facilities throughout the state, as well as camps and corrections centers. Ten of those correctional facilities are located in Gratiot, Ionia, Isabella, and Montcalm counties.
Applicants must be 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED certificate, pass a background check and have no felony convictions, and pass the civil service exam. The civil service exam can be waived if applicants have a bachelor's degree, an honorable discharge from active duty or National Guard duty or are currently a member of good standing in the National Guard, or two years of satisfactory Corrections Officer employment at the state or federal prison level.
Michigan Works! staff suggests that you bring along the following items to the Job Fair if applicable: official college transcripts, DD-214 (Military) Member-4 Copy, and/or employment history if you have Corrections Officer experience.
“Just because you've never thought of this type of work, don't rule this out,” said Suanne Tasker, Supervisor at the Montcalm County Service Center. “There are great opportunities and benefits to working for the state. In this case, positions include training, starting pay of over $14 an hour, and a wide range of benefits,” she added.
“Designed to help employers find skilled workers and job seekers prepare for, find and retain employment; Michigan Works! is a perfect partner for employers in the region,” said Janet Bloomfield, vice president of Central Area Michigan Works! Consortium.
“We've been overwhelmed by the response from these job fairs and pleased with the expertise and resources provided by Michigan Works!,” adds Joanne Bridgford, Equal Employment Opportunity and Recruitment Administrator with the State of Michigan Department of Corrections.
