Town of Salina - Lockheed Martin will hire up to 150 engineers in 2007 in response to its growing business and the pending retirement of a generation of engineers, the company announced Friday.

It is the second time in as many years that Lockheed has added engineers to the Town of Salina facility. Lockheed hired almost 400 engineers in 2005.

The company said it anticipated filling positions in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, radar systems engineering, systems integration and test engineering and embedded software engineering.

At that time, the company needed engineers to work on a $625 million contract to design and make a new air defense system and on a $413 million contract to build the next generation radar for the Navy's Hawked patrol plane.

The company still needs engineers to work on those contracts, as well as contracts won by its Undersea and Security Systems business, said company spokesman Chip Eschenfelder.

The company also expects about one-third of its current engineers to retire over the next five years, he said.

Maryland-based Lockheed Martin employs 2,350 in Syracuse.
