The approach of the holiday season also brings the promise of those extra temporary jobs. It's that time of the year when malls are decked out with holiday decorations, so that means people have another reason to come to the mall.
Job seeker: "Look for jobs."
Meridian Mall is like many shopping centers across mid-Michigan. Merchants are looking for extra help during the holiday season, and if you want work, you can find it there.
Job seeker: "Everybody's hiring, really."
That was certainly true for one college student.
Paul Birdsong, works at Meridian Mall: "I got a job at Arby's like almost immediately. I filled out my application and they told me to come in 20 minutes, and they interviewed and hired me right on the spot."
Paul Birdsong is a sophomore at Lansing Community College. He's hoping his new job will last beyond the holiday season.
Paul Birdsong: "I'm trying to get a job that's temporary. They tell me it's temporary, and then I blow their minds, and then they can't let me go, because I'm a good worker, so it wouldn't be a good business decision for them to let me go."
But even with all the jobs available at Meridian Mall, the manager at a cell phone booth says he's had only an average of two applicants a week, and sometimes none at all."
Manager: "People look more at stores when they think of a job, think more of a Radio Shack, it's what they're used to."
So they're jobs available during this holiday season for those who are looking.
