Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia Inc. has reopened its online job application process for the first time since February 2008.
The initial hiring phase for the Korean automaker's West Point plant drew more than 43,000 applications during a 30-day window last year. This time the application Web site will remain open indefinitely to field applications for maintenance and production positions at the plant.
Kia has already hired 1,200 employees, and officials have said that the plant will employ about 2,500 people at full capacity. The automaker restarted the application process to tap the larger pool of skilled labor that has become available as a result of layoffs in other industries around the state. Georgia's unemployment rate has nearly doubled from 5.3 percent during the February 2008 hiring phase to 10.1 percent last month.
“There are many qualified individuals who were secure in their employment a couple years ago, but who have lost their jobs since then,” said Randy Jackson, director of human resources and administration at Kia's Georgia plant, in a statement. “We’d love to have them join our team.”
Mr. Jackson also said previous applicants who were turned down in the initial phase but have developed additional skills since then should reapply.
The plant's first mass-produced Kia Sorento SUVs rolled off the lines at the plant last week, the same day the automaker reported record quarterly profits of about $340 million globally.
The hiring process is rigorous to ensure that workers are satisfied with their decision to join Kia, Mr. Jackson said. After they apply, applicants must pass an interview and a 40-hour pre-employment training session given by Georgia Quick Start, the state's workforce training agency. Even after that, "there are still two or three further steps before the final job offer," Mr. Jackson said.
Production workers start at an hourly wage of $14.90 and can advance up to $23.50 through scheduled raises based on performance. Maintenance workers start at $20.80 per hour, topping out at $27.00, according to the company's job Web site. Employment also includes a robust benefits package.
