WEST BLOOMFIELD - As the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital progresses toward its March 15 opening, hiring is under way to add 1,600 staff members.
The new facility seeks such clinical positions as registered nurses, pharmacists and certified registered nurse anesthetists. After filling critical clinical positions, the hospital will post non-clinical staff positions, such as administrators, counselors and cooks. Those positions will be posted in the fall.
The hospital is more than tripling its total workforce to 2,300 people, but the number and quality of candidates who already applied amazed the hospital, according to Rita Fields, vice president of talent and workforce strategies at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.
“We’re attracting candidates from all over southeast Michigan and beyond,” she said. “It’s amazing.”
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital signaled intentions to create a unique facility when it hired Gerard van Grinsven as its president and CEO. Instead of a health care background, van Grinsven brought expertise from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, where he was vice president and area general manager.
“I think people are really attracted to the vision,” said Fields.
Besides excellent customer service, the hospital wants to create a culture that engages employees. Fields said the hospital sometimes hears during the hiring process that people who worked in other places felt they were not treated respectfully, or that their ideas were not valued. The new hospital values the opposite.
“I really believe that the differentiating factor for us is the culture we’re developing,” said Fields.
Most of the jobs are full-time positions. The hospital will fill full-time positions first, and Fields said there probably will be some part-time positions.
Overall, the hospital plans to have 60 percent of the new jobs posted by the end of the year. While employees from other Henry Ford facilities will fill some of the jobs, the hospital said that “a large percentage” will come from outside.
“We’re looking for people who like working in health care, who like working with people,” said Fields.
Some of the people being hired will start right away, while others will begin later. Nurses, for example, will undergo a lot of training, and they are starting all at one time at the beginning of next year.
The hospital itself has been described as a wellness center, and patient rooms and other aspects of its design and architecture lean more toward a hotel than a typical hospital.
“The hospital is stunning,” said Fields. She noted there is a substantial public area where people can eat or just relax and read.
“It’s almost like a little city,” she said.
