Union Pacific is looking to hire 100 new train service employees in North Platte between now and the end of the year.
"The openings are due to both retirements and record volumes of freight traffic," said Mark Davis, UPRR spokesman.
Train service employees start as switchmen and brakemen working in Bailey Yard. They have the opportunity to graduate to conductors.
"Typically the conductor jobs are on the road," said Davis. They may go to Scottsbluff or Cheyenne or to Omaha or Marysville, Kansas.
After about 18 months in the job of switchman, brakeman or conductor an individual can apply internally to begin engineer training, according to Davis.
The railroad provides all training required for the positions. Train service positions offer excellent benefits and pay of up to $40,000 in the first year and $75,000 in future years. There is also the opportunity for advancement to other positions within the Union Pacific, according to Barb Schaefer, senior vice president of Human Resources.
Through the end of this year, Union Pacific will hire about 1,750 train service employees in a 15-state area.
With the exception of West Colton near Los Angeles, where 113 new train service employees are being sought and Houston, where 108 are needed, North Platte's Bailey Yard is seeking the largest number of new personnel in train service. There are another 54 also being sought for South Morrill near Scottsbluff.
Union Pacific also has openings for track workers, diesel mechanics, rail car repairers and truck drivers as well as management employees.
Individuals can apply for work online at www.UP.com. Applicants who pass the first online screening are interviewed in person.
