Today's talent pool is less crowded than it was a year ago.

That was the finding in the EDGE Report, conducted by CareerBuilder.com and Robert Half International.

The report found an overwhelming majority of hiring managers are finding it difficult to recruit quality employees. Of the employers surveyed, 81 percent said recruiting is equally or more challenging today compared to last year.

Lois Fazio, executive vice president of the Cherry Hill staffing firm Protocall Staffing, said she sees local companies suffering and lowering their standards because they can't find talented employees.

Protocall has not lowered its standards, she said, but instead has started conducting behavioral assessments to figure out if job applicants would fit well in a position, most often telemarketing and sales.

"You have to have quality employees when you're in temporary staffing," Fazio said. "You have to really understand a resume and know what you're looking for as far as talent and experience. If you can do that, you'll do well finding the right candidate."

Conducted in July, the survey included more than 1,000 hiring managers.

Faced with a talent shortage, many of the respondents cited the retiring baby boomer generation for creating a large amount of vacant positions to be filled.

While Protocall screens employees with online behavioral assessments, asking questions about scenarios they might face in the workplace, companies are also increasing salaries and offering bonuses to attract talent, she said.

But the survey still showed one-in-five hiring managers could not attract qualified staff because they could not offer competitive compensation packages.

"It's very competitive," Fazio said. "We've started offering a referral bonus to our clients. Good talent knows good talent."
