Regarding "Let's get smart," about Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's trip to Washington, D.C., with other mayors to discuss illegal immigration (Editorial, Thursday):
The editorial says trying to chase illegal immigrants away is unrealistic.
But also in The Republic on Thursday was a front-page article about apartments going empty because our recent hiring law is chasing illegal immigrants to other states or back to their home countries.
Maybe our mayor should give the new law a little more time to work. After all, not a single company has lost its business license yet for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.
When that happens, not only will there be more empty apartments, but just maybe there will be less crime, less crowded emergency rooms and less crowded classrooms as well. - David Wheet,Phoenix
