MetLife Home Loans is expanding across the Puget Sound region even as the mortgage industry is hammered by the nationwide housing downturn.
The company — known far more for its insurance offerings than its newly launched mortgage division — has expanded its sales force of mortgage lenders by 20 percent in the last month to 60 employees. It plans to add another 25 percent to the mortgage sales force over the next several months, said Rose Marie David, Seattle district sales leader for MetLife.
The company — the nation’s largest life insurance provider — now employs a total of 130 people locally in its home loan and banking division.
In the Puget Sound region, MetLife has found a large pool of available mortgage lenders, many of them recently laid off by Washington Mutual and other local companies.
