Hiring Down, Salaries Up at SMBs

Small-business hiring declined last month while salaries continued to grow, according to the October 2006 SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard. The Scorecard hiring index ended the month of October at 10,432 nationwide, down seven points. Year to date, small-business hiring has decreased 0.3 percent as of the end of October, while salaries trended higher for the 14th consecutive month. The average small-business salary nationwide now stands at an annualized rate of $31,083. SurePayroll Scorecard results are based on payroll data from more than 17,000 small businesses nationwide.
