Bank One is adding 28 top-shelf banking jobs at its branches in Northwest Indiana.
The bank wants to have 28 new "relationship bankers" on board by year's end to handle everything from opening accounts to helping customers make long-term investment decisions, according to Dave Mika, Bank One retail manager for Northwest Indiana.
"The key is finding the right person with the right sales background where they're really in tune to asking the customer questions ... and then helping the customer make decisions based on their needs," Mika said.
The job pays about $50,000 per year, according to Mika.
Bank One's move is the most recent in an intense competition for banking customers in Northwest Indiana, which includes both hiring and bricks-and-mortar projects.
"We've had pretty significant growth and that growth is not only reflected in physical facilities but also in customer service," said Cal Bellamy, Bank Calumet chairman and chief executive officer.
Bank Calumet has added the equivalent of 16 full-time positions in the last year, according to Bellamy. A number of the new jobs have been in investments, management and commercial loans.
Bank Calumet completed the refurbishing of its headquarters building in downtown Hammond earlier this year and is spending $1 million to expand its Highland branch.
A number of area banks have been hop-scotching new branches into developing areas and others have gone the route of adding branches in supermarkets and stores.
Bank One plans to remodel many of its 33 branches in Northwest Indiana and upgrade about 127 ATMs starting next year, according to the bank.
Bank One will be adding about 80 relationship bankers in areas around the state, according to Mika. The bank currently has about 55 such bankers in Northwest Indiana, a result of an intense hiring drive over the past two years.
Job fairs for the same positions at Bank One branches in Elkhart and Fort Wayne drew about 100 interested applicants, according to Mika. The bank plans to hold a similar job fair in Northwest Indiana in the near future.
Bank One offers a three-month training curriculum for new relationship bankers, according to Mika. For those not already licensed to sell annuities or investments, the curriculum includes training toward fulfilling the licensing requirements of the National Association of Securities Dealers.
