Sidebar: IT Hiring to Remain Flat By Thomas Hoffman COMPUTERWORLD

Even though labor costs typically account for more than half of total IT spending by companies, most market-research firms don't currently factor workforce trends into their spending models.
But based on survey results released last week by Robert Half Technology in Menlo Park, Calif., the overall outlook for IT hiring plans remains flat.
The subsidiary of Robert Half International Inc. said that the vast majority of the 1,400 CIOs it surveyed in July plan to maintain their current IT staffing levels during the fourth quarter.
Only 9% of the respondents said they expect to expand their IT departments in the fourth quarter, whereas just 4% anticipate staff reductions, according to Robert Half.
The survey respondents said the technical skills in highest demand include knowledge of Windows and Microsoft's SQL Server database, as well as Cisco network administration. The survey was conducted among CIOs at U.S. companies with at least 100 employees.
Gartner Inc. analyst David Hankin said that beginning this month, his firm plans to adjust the calculations it uses to compile its monthly Technology Demand Index in an effort to capture data about IT hiring and labor trends, including the effects of different types of outsourcing deals.
