In what company officials say is the first wave of hiring for San Antonio's planned Toyota Tundra assembly plant, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas Inc. announced Thursday that the company will begin hiring human resource and engineering professionals.

However, Toyota will not accept applications for production team members -- which will represent the majority of its San Antonio work force -- until some time next year.

The $800 million San Antonio plant is not scheduled to open until 2006.

"We strongly recommend that anyone interested in seeking these professional employment opportunities for the new San Antonio plant first review www.toyota.com," says Leo Gomez, general manager of administration for the San Antonio assembly plant.

Gomez adds that those wishing to apply for the human resource and engineering positions must do so via the Web site and not through the local operations. He did not specify how many people Toyota will ultimately hire for these positions.

In February of 2003, Toyota announced that it had selected San Antonio as the site for its Texas plant, which is expected to produce some 150,000 Tundra pickup trucks annually beginning in the fall of 2006. The company is expected to bring some 2,000 new jobs to the area.
