OWEGO, N.Y. - After hiring nearly 800 people during 2005, the man who oversees Lockheed Martin's big site near Binghamton says hundreds more will start working there this year.

Frank Meyer -- Lockheed Systems Integration president -- says about 400 more people likely will be hired in 2006 at the town of Owego plant.

Meyer told Binghamton radio station W-N-B-F that about two-thirds of the jobs for the Marine One presidential helicopter program have been filled.

Meyer said Lockheed is in a "spirited competition" to land a huge contract to build Navy search-and-rescue helicopters. That is to be awarded within the next six months.

If Lockheed is chosen for that program, the company would hire several hundred more people to work at the Tioga County site.
