Mercedes Hiring for Expanded Production

Mercedes-Benz is updating its job applications for expanded production at its giant plant in Vance.

The auto manufacturer will need 1600 new workers this year as it completes doubling capacity to make M-Class sport utility vehicles and the GST roadster.

The previous state-administered hiring process for those jobs was closed after 26,000 applications were received in 2001.

Spokeswoman Felycia Jerald says odds are some of the people who applied in 2001 have moved or have new work experience the company doesn't know about.

Phyllis Wesley, a spokeswoman for Alabama Industrial Development Training, says anyone who has ever applied for a Mercedes job must file a new application.

To get an application, people have to request one in writing from the state training agency.

Visit their website or mail: AIDT, P.O. Box 1820, Tuscaloosa, AL, 35403-9843.

Applicants must enclose a stamped, self-addressed, business-sized envelope with the written request for an application. Requests for an application must be postmarked no later than March 5, and the completed application must be returned with a postmark no later than April 2.
