Companies search for temporary workers

November 10, 2005

It is the time of year when employers are looking to hire extra help to get them through the hectic days of the holiday season.

If you are looking to make a little extra cash for Christmas, you might want to hurry, because those seasonal jobs are numbered.

Experts tell us there are thousands of new jobs available with a variety of companies this time of year.

Target stores began their search for seasonal holiday temporary help in mid-October. The company says by the time the Christmas holiday shopping season officially begins on the day after Thanksgiving, those new workers are experts at their jobs.

"We try to have everybody all in place before the holiday season," said Target's Linda Green.

Most of the big retailers and department stores looking for extra help during the holidays are advertising right now.

It's not just retailers. Corporate, private, industrial, and restaurant businesses all hire temporary replacements to fill-in for employees who take vacation during the holidays.

Target, like many other businesses, has in-store computer systems which allow applicants to apply for jobs electronically. "They fill out the application. We try to review the application and determine who is the best candidate for interviewing," Green said.

In Genesee County, nearly 3,000 additional jobs were created and filled by temporary workers from November of 2004 to February of 2005.

Most retailers are still hiring. However, those seasonal temporary jobs are filled pretty fast.
