What a difference 20 months makes. In January, 2002, General Electric Transportation Systems announced massive layoffs planned for the Lawrence Park plant--about 925. Eventually, only about 130 workers actually got pink slips, and now--because of an upturn in the economy and an increase in locomotive orders--those workers have not only been called back, but GE is adding at least 180 new employees. The company reportedly has orders for 500 locomotives for 2004, which is the reason for the hirings. UE Local 506 chief Frank Fusco says, "Things have turned around somewhat. Hopefully this is just the beginning of it." For more information on applying at GE, please click on the link below to CareerLink.
