ROANOKE, VA. - Goodyear Tire & Rubber agreed to pay $925,000 to hundreds of women who were denied tire-building jobs at its Virginia plant.

The payment is part of a consent decree approved by an administrative law judge to resolve a lawsuit filed by the Labor Department last year on behalf of 800 women who were denied jobs at the Danville, Va., plant in the late 1990s. As a federal contractor, the Akron, Ohio-based company is prohibited from employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

As part of the decree, Goodyear will hire up to 60 of the women who are still interested in working at the 2,400-worker Danville plant.
