SAO PAULO - Ford Motor Company (F) is hiring at one of its units in Sao Paulo as record-breaking car sales continue to shrink the number of unsold vehicles, a local labor union said Thursday.
Ford will hire 278 workers on a one-year contract at its engine and transmission plant in Taubate, located in the interior of Sao Paulo state, according to the Taubate and Region Metal Workers Union.
Production of motor vehicles slowed during a strike last month and the stock of unsold vehicles dwindled as a result of booming September car sales of over 300,000 units for the major national auto makers, including Ford.
Ford is Brazil's No. 4 auto maker behind General Motors, Volkswagen and Fiat.
Earlier this month, the National Motor Vehicles Manufacturers Association said the stock of new cars was around 17 days; normally, it would be at least 21 days.
On Tuesday, Rogelio Goldfarb, a Ford executive in Brazil, said car makers should sell a total of 3.1 million vehicles next year, up from around 3 million expected in 2009.
Ford's Taubate office produces 1,000 engines and 1,400 transmissions daily and employs around 1,350 workers.
