Delivery service DHL Express USA prepared to cut the ribbon on a new distribution facility in the District on Tuesday and pledged to cut the city’s number of unemployed as well.
In a consolidation of several suburban facilities, DHL Express established a new 70,000-square-foot regional distribution center at 3130 V St. NE. The shipper cited its central location and access to highways and roadways for the choice.
DHL said the new location would immediately create 59 new full-time positions, the majority of which will be filled by D.C. residents. DHL also indicated it expects to hire additional staff and independent contractors over the next few months as the services at the site expand.
The facility will service clients in D.C., Northern Virginia, Maryland and parts of West Virginia. "I am delighted that DHL has chosen Ward 5 as the location of its new facility," said Councilman Harry "Tommy" Thomas Jr., D-Ward 5. "Ward 5 is ideally located for businesses that serve the Washington area and other East Coast destinations. I warmly welcome DHL to Ward 5 and look forward to a building positive working relationship DHL and its employees."
The property is owned by Bethesda-based Stanley Martin Commercial, one of the largest owners of industrial space in the District. An affiliate of Stanley Martin Cos. Inc., the commercial division generates about $15 million in annual revenue.
