Eight businesses from around Florida were honored this morning by the state for their leadership in employing individuals with disabilities.
The ceremony marked the start of Disability Employment Awareness Month.
The companies received the Florida Exceptional Employer Award, which recognizes both the commitment of the firms to hiring and retaining people with disabilities, but also their initiative in creating unique employment opportunities, according to the state's Agency for Persons with Disabilities.
"Not only are the employers doing the right thing in their community, but it's also generally the smart thing because these employees are motivated, they show up, and give a good, hard effort," said Jim DeBeaugrine, APD's director.
The honored employers were Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach, Call 4 Health in Boca Raton, Key West restaurant Fausto's Food Palace, Hilton at Home Reservations in Tampa, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, Stretcher Limo of New Port Richey, Walgreens Distribution Centers of Florida, and Wal-Mart of Florida.
