The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for workers to collect data in advance of the 2010 Census.
The government agency will hire more than 1,500 people in an 8-county area that includes Brevard and Indian River counties for census work.
Up first is address listing, the process that updates addresses already in census records in advance of mailing out the census forms, said Linda Ogle, the local census office manager for the area who is based in Port St. Lucie.
Nationwide, the bureau will hire hundreds of thousands of census takers over the next two years to gather information.
The bureau is generally seeking applicants who are U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old and have a valid Social Security number. Applicants will have to pass a background check and complete a written test of basic skills, such as reading, working with numbers and interpreting information.
As for pay, bureau officials examine wages across the nation, and set pay rates on a county-by-county basis, ensuring that census jobs are among the better-paying part-time positions.
People hired for address listing typically work 20 to 40 hours per week for several weeks, largely on a schedule of the their choosing. The work must be done during daylight hours, and there are minimum amounts of work that must be completed.
