Syaed Ali, president and CEO of Buffalo-based tech company Sail-it, plans to hire 150 people within the next 10 months.

Doing so would triple staff at the information technology and management consulting firm, which employs about 70. Ali is looking mostly for network engineers and software developers to support clients from divergent industries. Said some of the work, Ali said, will support electronic medical records, some for proprietary software technology and others to work on stand alone projects outside of health care. They will work among the company’s three divisions: consulting, engineering and new product development.

“We’re expanding because of the economy, we work on efficiency projects, those that reduce IT costs,” Ali said. Although times are bad, he explained, the company usually has to look for accounts. These days, he said, clients are looking to them for ways to cut costs.

When asked why full-time employees were to be hired instead of freelancers, Ali said full-time workers make more sense because there’s no guarantee the company can keep a freelancer over a long period of time for multiple projects.

“Another thing is when you’re hiring independent contractors, which we’ve done in the past, we’ve found you end up having a long-term arrangement with them anyway. It’s more efficient for us to have stability,” he said.

“We will be recruiting heavily in local colleges and universities, nationally and internationally,” said Brian Ellis, Sail-it’s chief marketing officer.

The firm will begin accepting resumes Nov. 3, for employment opportunities, paid internships and unpaid internships. Resumes can be sent to hr@sail-it.net. The company will accept them through Dec. 8.
