MADISON, WI. -- A state Assemblyman wants to offer tax credits worth up to $8,000 per job to state businesses that hire returning veterans.
Steve Wieckert, R-Appleton, said that veterans have risked their lives and missed out on time to advance their careers.
Some veterans' groups said that they support Wieckert's bill, which could apply to the estimated 276,000 state veterans under the age of 65.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, state unemployment figures in 2005 were higher for young, returning veterans than for their peers.
A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch said that he supports the bill's concept. A spokesman for Gov. Jim Doyle said the governor supports any efforts to help returning veterans, but he would need to consider whether this bill is the best method to help them get jobs.
