ZANESVILLE - Avon could begin some early hiring for its distribution center in the Eastpointe Business Park in the next few months, although the bulk of the positions won't be available until later in the year.

Spokesperson Jennifer Vargas said this week that positions to help prepare the center for opening would be offered through Avon's career Web site, a special web link specific to the Zanesville positions and through CareerBuilder.

"There will be a couple of engineering positions open, a few jobs, for helping to lay the ground work in the plant. These are critical to the start-up," Vargas said. "A couple will pop up here and there in the next few months. It's exciting for us as we continue to prepare for the opening." The project itself - the company is investing as much as $117 million to consolidate two other distribution centers into the Washington Township site - is coming along nicely, with sewer and waterline extensions progressing, according to Zanesville-Muskingum County Port Authority Director Jerry Nolder.

The temporary road to the 590,000-square-foot facility will be getting gravel and Nolder said an asphalt plant in Columbus is open and he hopes the road can be paved as soon as the winter weather subsides.

The sewer lift station is currently out to bid and that project will be awarded within the week and expected to be completed by early May.

"It's still their desire to be up and running by the end of 2008," Nolder said. "There will be a much brighter job outlook for the area this year."

In addition to the Avon job prospects, Nolder added that local contractors and haulers are taking part in the construction phase, including roofers and sewer workers.

Among the jobs expected to be available include administrative and clerical, warehouse operators and supervisors, information technology and finance.

Vargas added that she anticipates that most of the hiring will occur later in the year and the company is encouraging those interested in the positions to send their resumes through the Web sites.
