AirTran Airways Corp. this month announced plans for new flight attendants and a recall of some furloughed pilots, but those additions won’t come with more capacity.

Plans for 120 new flight attendant jobs and the call-back of 60 furloughed pilots come after Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran, a recent addition at Port Columbus International Airport, furloughed 169 pilots and asked 300 attendants to take leave amid capacity cuts. Company spokesman Tad Hutcheson said the Orlando-based carrier sent recall notices to its pilots Jan. 9. The carrier also sent notices for 40 pilots to return in December, bringing total call-backs to 100.

Considering the poor job market for commercial pilots, Hutcheson said he expects all the furloughed pilots to return.

Open positions and other factors necessitated the airline also hire 120 new flight attendants, while additional attendants might be hired if all the attendants on leave do not return.

“It’s based on the operational needs of the airline for the summer schedule,” Hutcheson said.

All AirTran pilots are based in Atlanta, where the airline makes two daily flights from Columbus. AirTran said it also asked the 300 flight attendants on leave to return to work and has hired about a dozen mechanics.

While late spring and summer traditionally are an airline’s busiest seasons, the carrier said it won’t be growing its network compared with the same period last year. AirTran previously announced plans to shrink capacity an additional 3 percent to 7 percent this year.

AirTran is one of 11 carriers at Port Columbus that make 152 daily flights to more than 30 airports.
