MILWAUKEE -- Employers plan to continuing hiring this summer at about the same pace as over the past couple of years.
The latest survey by employment services firm Manpower found that 31 percent expected to add to their payrolls during the third quarter, while 6 percent said they would probably cut staff levels.
Another 57 percent did not think they would make any changes in their hiring pace, while 6 percent were not sure.
Job hunting is likely to be better in some areas than in others.
Employers in four sectors -- Transportation/Public Utilities, Finance/Insurance/Real Estate, Services and Public Administration -- said they may do more hiring.
On the other hand, construction employers said they were less likely to add staff in the late summer months than they were in the spring.
"Although Construction employers expect to hire at a brisk pace again during the third quarter, hiring in this sector has inched downward throughout 2006. There is rampant speculation about the state of the housing market, and these survey results are another piece of evidence that point toward a cooling trend," said Jeffrey Joerres, CEO of Manpower Inc.
Joerres said that the Northeast was the only area to report a measurable change in hiring plans, with slightly improved job prospects in store for the third quarter.
Employers in the South and West reported the strongest hiring intentions, while those in the Midwest reported the most conservative staffing plans.
