Teen employment always grows in the summer, but the employment gain this summer among U.S. teens looks to be the lowest in 50 years, according to a new report by the outplacement and research firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

Teen employment grew by 683,000 in June, compared with 1.1 million new jobs teens were able to find in June 2007, according to Challenger, which analyzed data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

July employment typically falls significantly for teens, the company said. It projects total summer hiring for May, June and July will be about 1.2 million for U.S. teens, which "would be the smallest summer employment gain among teenagers since 1958."
