NY1 Employment reporter Asa Aarons spoke with recruiter Kimberly Bishop about some surefire ways to ruin your employment chances.

The tools of job hunting have changed, with some companies even posting online videos to explain the application process. But while the technology has changed, the rules for grabbing an interview have not.

"Don't show up at someone's office unannounced," says recruiter Kimberly Bishop. "Don't try to force a meeting unless you've been invited to a meeting. You can suggest a meeting, but don't try to force it to happen."

Bishop also says job seekers should be careful about trying to bluff their way into a meeting.

"Don't pretend you know the recruiter when you are calling the office," she says. "Sometimes my assistant will get phones calls from people who say, 'I'm following up on a conversation that I had with Kim.' When, in fact, I've never spoken with them. So those are the kind of things that aren't helpful and will stop the process in its tracks."

Bishop says while gimmicks may get potential employees attention, it's often the wrong kind.

"I've seen candidates compare their careers to Broadway plays and sports tournaments," Bishop says. "I can remember the story, but not the candidate in a positive way."

And, she says, even those in dire need of a job should not come across desperate during an interview.

Bishop says it's best for job seekers to stick with the basics: a perfectly-crafted resume, and strong, knowledge answers.
