On September 14, 100 hundred human resource professionals from across Southwest Virginia attended a labor and employment law seminar presented by the law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC. The event featured keynote speaker Leslie E. Silverman, Commissioner of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Silverman, who is one of five Commission members charged with making equal employment opportunity policy, discussed current and planned activities at the EEOC. According to Ms. Silverman, the EEOC takes 75,000 to 80,000 charges of workplace civil rights violations per year. These charges are handled in 53 field offices, including two new offices in Las Vegas, Nevada and Mobile, Alabama. Ms. Silverman said the EEOC has identified three areas of focus for the coming years: systemic discrimination against large groups; the education of young workers about their workplace rights; and race and color discrimination.
The all-day seminar, which was held at the Hemlock Haven Conference Center in Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, Virginia, covered a full range of employment issues including Virginia-specific legal developments, employer health initiatives, EEOC investigations, and workers' compensation decisions and issues. The seminar also included a panel discussion by several of the Firm's attorneys to include Steve Trent, Jennifer Keller, Gary Edwards, Matt Davison and Eric Thiessen.
