BIRMINGHAM, AL. -- The U.S. Labor Department has cited Warrior and Associates in Cottondale for violating federal employment laws.

Oliver Peebles, head of the Wage and Hour Division office in Birmingham, said the firm was ordered to pay almost $12,000 in civil penalties for allowing minors to work.

Investigators found that an employee involved in a November 14th trench collapse at a Cottondale construction site was 17-years-old. Peebles said the teenager's duties included working in 10-foot deep excavation and operating a truck to transport gravel.

Investigators also determined he operated a back hoe to move pipes and backfill trenches.

The accident remains under investigation. Attempts to reach the company were unsuccessful.
