The job market showed signs of improvement throughout the state last month as the Chicago metropolitan area unemployment rate fell to 9.7 percent from 10.5 percent in July, the Illinois Department of Employment Security said Thursday.
Since being flat in March, the not seasonally adjusted rate has declined in four of the last five months. The rate was down from 10.1 percent in August 2009.
The area shed 55,700 jobs over the year, but that was an improvement over the 58,200 jobs lost year-over-year in July 2010. Unemployment rates dropped in nine of 12 Illinois metropolitan areas -- the first time in 40 months the rate dropped in most metropolitan areas.
Nationally, applications for unemployment benefits rose for the first time in five weeks.
