Florida may have a lower rate of unemployment than the national average but that does not make up for the hourly wages.

According to a study by Florida International University, Florida's median hourly wage in 2002 was $9.90, more than 5 percent below the national average of $10.50. Florida was also behind most other southeastern states. Jobs that are below the average are hospitality, retail, and health care trades.
