ST. LOUIS -- They pave the way to job opportunities and job training for the men and women who sacrifice for freedom. During a General Session of its 85th National Convention at America's Center here, the 2.8 million-member American Legion salutes three 2002 superstars of the veterans-employment service.

The nation's largest veterans organization today honored Alonzo Philmore of Lake City, Fla., as Outstanding Local Veterans Employment Representative of the Year; Richard Perez of Yuma, Ariz., as Outstanding Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist of the Year; and Central Texas Workforce Center of Killeen, Texas, as Outstanding Employment Service Office of the Year. "The recipients of these awards deserve to be honored," American Legion National Commander Ronald F. Conley said. "They provide a valuable public service. They give a helping hand to veterans readjusting to civilian life. For most veterans, the key to that transition is finding suitable employment and job training or re-training."

The American Legion is the nation's largest veterans organization. To ensure veterans receive employment preference and other benefits to which they are entitled, the organization fights for adequate funding for the Department of Labor's Veterans Employment and Training Service under which veterans employment specialists work.
