Improving employment trend in Australia ABC Radio Australia News
August 04, 2003
A monthly survey of newspaper employment advertising in Australia is showing a further improvement:
Carried out by the ANZ Bank, the survey shows the number of classified job advertisements placed in the major daily newspapers has increased by 1.4 per cent in July.
In an average week, about 20,800 employment notices were published.
Our reporter, Adrian Thirsk says the latest rise follows increases in May and June.
ANZ chief economist, Saul Eslake says it signals a likelihood that positive employment growth will emerge in the September quarter.
"I'm not sure that the rise in employment foreshadowed over the next few months by the latest job advertisements releases will be enough to push unemployment below 6%, but, it does seem as though we'll be holding in that 6-6.25% area," he says.
